Why volunteer with SenExperience+?

Life is about meaningful experiences, not possessions. And no experience is more fulfilling than making a difference where it really counts – as a volunteer in one of our communities. Living in carefully hand-picked host families for the duration of your programme, you’ll be immersed in a new way of life, free from the frenzy of the developed world. Instead, you’ll be part of a social setting where relationships and people matter more than any status symbol or riches. Bringing your unique abilities and talents to bear, you’ll be able to give back, while expanding your horizons and discovering more about yourself, your mission and your values. And you’ll do all of this in the knowledge that your efforts contribute to the sustainable development of Senegal and the Gambia.

How it works

About our Programmes

SenExperience+ offers all volunteers the rare opportunity to make both a real difference to the local community and a success of their own experience abroad. Indeed, participating in a volunteer programme in Senegal and the Gambia, both politically stable and culturally rich countries, with a diverse climate and welcoming inhabitants, can be an unforgettable experience.

There is strong demand for volunteers to work in healthcare, education and communication. Moreover, local families are keen to share their homes and their culture with you and to also learn about your background.

All of our projects are overseen by people within the establishments where we place volunteers. For all projects, volunteers are provided with work for the length of their visit – though their efforts have a long-lasting effect. Each project has its own timetable and set of responsibilities. If volunteers would like to change their timetable or to do more / less hours, they are able to discuss this with their project leader.

So if you inspired to share your knowledge and culture and, in return, experience life in a new country, then join us to help build a better future for children and adults in need.

Teaching

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Senegal and the Gambia are two politically stable countries and have a high standard of education. Indeed, Senegalese and Gambian schools are attended children of varying African nationalities.

In Senegal, French is taught from nursery school, while in the Gambia English is thaught from nursery school and other European languages, such as Spanish and German, are taught from secondary level. Given that tourism is one of most important industries in these countries, the Department for Education insists building relations with European countries through teaching English, Spanish and German etc as second languages. The children tend to admire your language skills and are generally keen to learn about your culture. Alongside teaching English, you can organise your own programme and teach other subjects such as IT, music, maths, drama and science.

The age of the pupils of the colleges and schools where our volunteers will teach is between 15 and 19 years. However, the possibility exists to give English or French lessons to children in the CEM2 class (last year of primary school) who are between 12 and 15 years old, and to the children of the neighbourhood where you are accomodated.

20 hours per week = 4 hours per day = 2 hours in each class (different levels).

Healthcare

Working in the Senegalese or Gambian healthcare system will enable you to get a high level view of the issues in the country. During your placement in a hospital, you will work alongside doctors who have local knowledge and speak the local languages. Your scope of work will be wide and varied. All of the centres where are volunteers are placed are well-equipped and provide a service to people from the local town and surrounding villages. During your free time, you will also have the opportunity to work in the infirmaries of local schools or even that of our local centre for street children.

20 hours per week = 4 hours per day.

Coaching Sports

If you would like to work on your sporting capabilities and to share them with others, then why not join SenExperience+ and also have the opportunity to make new friends in a new country? Your role would be to train children aged 10 -16 at our own football centre. You would also work with the coaches of local teams participating in the regional and national championships; as such you will become the link between the children and the coaches. The Senegalese and Gambian are well known for their strong sporting abilities and, in any event, sport is a universal language which brings people together. You will be in charge of the project and will also have to organise your own timetable during the week (and sometimes Saturdays) with the children. As well as football, it is also possible to coach them in other sports including basket ball, roller skating, athletics and volleyball.

20 hours per week = 4 hours per day = 2 hours with the beginners, 1 hour with the under 13s and under 17s.

Nursery School

In this educational programme, you will work with very young children aged from 4-6. Your role will be to help out with activities, such as painting, arts & crafts, playing games and singing. You may also help in providing writing lessons to help prepare the children for their first year at primary school. During your free time, you can help out at our centre for the disabled and the local street children. Work that needs to be done there includes, cooking (SenExperience+ provides all food and cooking utensils), cleaning and helping to wash the children. At the weekends, we often organise Senegalese dance workshops with the children at the centre and girls from the local district.

20 hours per week = 4 hours per day = 2 hours with each group of children (4-6 years).

French Classes

If you would like to learn or improve your French in a francophone country, then Senegal is ideal. In daily life, in any situation you can imagine, you will have the chance to practise what you have learnt. SenExperience+ is able to provide a qualified French teacher who can give private classes and provide necessary material, e.g. text books. You will be evaluated at the end of every chapter to check your progress. In addition, you will stay with a family that will help you practise your French.

15 hours per week = 3 hours per day = 2 hours of teaching time and 1 hour of exercises.

Music, Dance and Drumming

gambia3

Thanks to its ethnic and cultural diversity, Senegal and the Gambia are one of most well-known African countries for music. Indeed, its music is known around the world, with noted artists including Youssou N´Dour, Baba Maal and Ismaël Lo. Given this background, SenExperience+ has set up a dream project for those interested in music and that is to learn how to play typical African musical instruments, such as the djembé, the sabaar and the tama (types of drum).. Our percussion classes are accompanied by dance classes for the national Senegalese dance, Mbalax. Sometimes dance excursions to the beach are also organised.

9 hours per week = 3 hours per day = 2 hours of percussion and 1 hour of dance.

Journalism

As with all of our projects in Senegal and the Gambia, volunteers on the journalism project, whether at the radio or television centre) will work alongside local professionals. As such, you will have a great opportunity to discover more about the local cultures and to learn a lot about the country as a whole. As part of your work, you will be conducting interviews, writing articles or making programmes in English, even with listener participation! Working in a Senegalese or Gambian radio station, can prove to be a valuable experience. Finally, given the importance of the role that you will play in the team, it is a requirement of this programme that you have a fairly high level of French (spoken and written).

20 hours per week = 4 hours per day.

Tourism Projects

SenExperience+ has direct links with well-known hotels, museums, art galleries and libraries across the country. Given this, we can act as a link between you and these establishments and help you find a tourism-related work placement in Senegal and the Gambia. Possibilities include:
– Working in a 3 or 4 star hotel as an assistant receptionist.
– Working in a museum exhibiting both classical and contemporary African works of art.

20 hours per week = 4 hours per day.
